What i'd like to see would be that the npc communites can improve and fortify themselves.
It's kinda unusual to me that a community you might run into first this in the beginning of the game still lives in a shack days or months later.
Let them start setting up some beds, maybe a palce to cook/grow food, some fortifications and maybe start having a vehicle in front of their base.
The bases could have a level system. Something like:
level 1 they have started to fortify their base.
Level 2 they are setting up some infrastructure like food and production.
Level 3 they might have active guards.
The bonuses provided from these NPC camps could increase with level as well.
This could open up a new line of quests where players need to assist with gathering upgrades for these bases and even need to donate/assist with the correct profession(Utilities, Gardening,etc,etc)
I think this would give the worlds we live in much more depth and make the various encampments more than just some random bonus.
